What Your Halloween Costume Says About Your Mental Health

When people find out I am a therapist the main response I get is “Oh I bet you are psychoanalyzing me,” usually that’s not true. However, I thought I would use that response and have some fun with Halloween. Here is your Halloween costume horoscope through the lens of a therapist. (Please note this is satire and in no way am I saying this is 100% true about you however if you feel like it’s accurate maybe your subconscious is telling you something.)

  • Pirate –You like pushing the boundaries and are a thrill seeker. Sometimes it’s hard to care about other people’s needs because you are worried they will take too much from you. You have an avoidant attachment style and need to learn to lean into your vulnerable side.
  • She Hulk –You feel as though you have to present yourself as someone big and tough in order to get the attention you need and think you deserve. You drive a Subaru or pick-up, wear comfortable shoes, and are a human rights advocate. Find another she-hulk to spend the day with that makes you feel comfortable in your human form.
  • Sexy Nurse –Frustrated by partner’s inattention. Playing out a sexual fantasy where you control the desires of those around you. Might want to explore your S&M/dominatrix skills and abilities.
  • Rhaenyra from House of Dragons –Stands for what you think you deserve, care about family, and have to deal with a lot of family drama. It can be hard to know who to trust. Therapy can help you look for red flags in people and trust your intuition.
  • Max from Stranger Things –You’re struggling with grief and guilt over an ending of a relationship (either by choice or death). As a coping skill, you isolate yourself and play your favorite song on repeat. In therapy, you can learn to trust others and learn how to tell what healthy relationships look like.
  • Thor –You are stubborn and that gets in your way. You tend to think you can do things on your own when in reality you need to lean on your friends and family for support. Behind the muscle is a person who just wants to be loved. Therapy can help you tap into your feelings so that you can find your Jane Foster.
  • Maverick Top Gun –Strong feelings of loyalty and duty but these often conflict with your own needs. Speed turns you on and you have no patience for rules.
  • Princess (early Disney versions) -You have an anxious attachment style. You are probably attracted to someone like Pirate, Thor, or Maverick however, what you need to know is that you don’t need any of those guys to save you. Therapy can help you boost your self-esteem and learn how to set boundaries.
  • Tourist –You are really struggling with seasonal depression and this is your way to combat that. Instead of avoiding your feeling seek out a therapist to learn coping skills to combat seasonal depression.
  • Batman – You have attachment issues, unresolved grief, and hide behind a mask to avoid difficult feelings. While you’ve done a great job choosing a fulfilling career, you need a therapist to help you build positive and authentic relationships.
  • Jeffery Dahmer -Just check yourself into the psych ward.

Hope you had a good laugh with this. Tell me in the comments what your favorite Halloween candy is. I love the very controversial candy corn and pumpkin shaped Reese’s

  1. My favorite is Reese’s but not the pumpkin, it’s got to be the original cup and I will stand by that.

  2. Thousands of mini snickers
