Embracing Solitude: 9 Self-Love Practices for Alone Time

Some people stay in relationships because the idea of being alone is terrifying. Not just fear that I am going to be single for the rest of my life, but what do I do when I am just by myself? The fear of being disconnected and alone is so terrifying that they would rather stay in a relationship that no longer serves them. I often get asked, “What am I supposed to do with myself when I am alone?”

On a deeper level, it’s important to understand why being in a room by yourself is so terrifying. Often time there are feelings of feeling unworthy, not enough, or unlovable. These are such heavy things to carry with you, and as painful as they might be, they deserve space to heal instead of avoiding them by staying in an unhealthy relationship.

Here are 9 ways to spend time alone that promote self-love and foster a deeper understanding of yourself:

1. Meditation and Mindfulness:

Set aside time to practice meditation or mindfulness. It helps calm the mind, reduces stress, and fosters self-awareness and self-acceptance. During this time, you might choose to observe your thoughts and notice patterns or feelings that arise. This time can provide space to those hurting parts that need to be seen.

2. Journaling:

A journal can be a safe place for you to express your feelings. It’s a place where the hurt parts of you can have a chance to speak unfiltered. Writing can help you gain clarity, relieve stress, and cultivate self-awareness. Your journal doesn’t have to be shared with anyone. This space can be a place to make sense of what you are feeling or, at the very least, give these feelings an avenue to leave your mind and body.

3. Creative Expression:

Engage in a creative activity like painting, drawing, writing poetry, or playing music. Expressing yourself creatively can be deeply fulfilling and nourishing for your soul. When we engage in creativity, we are opening a different part of ourselves and creating opportunities for more insight into ourselves. Creative expression can be a great way to process our feelings and understand ourselves through a different lens.

4. Nature Walks:

Spend time in nature, whether it’s a walk in the park, a hike, or simply sitting in a peaceful natural setting. Nature has a calming effect and can rejuvenate your mind and body. During this time, allow yourself to be present and let whatever comes come.

5. Self-Care Rituals:

In times of loneliness, creating self-care rituals can help ease the discomfort you feel. Trudging through these uncomfortable water can be exhausting. Therefore, self-care is crucial. These rituals can lighten the load of the heavy feelings you are carrying with you.

6. Exercise and Movement:

Our body holds our stress, and one way to get it to shift is through movement. Engage in physical activities that you enjoy, whether it’s yoga, dancing, jogging, or a workout at home. Exercise releases endorphins and boosts your mood, contributing to self-love. While exercising, be mindful of the thoughts you are having. Half of exercise is a mental game. Meet yourself with kindness.

7. Healthy Cooking and Eating:

Prepare a nutritious and delicious meal for yourself. Cooking can be a therapeutic activity, and nourishing your body with wholesome food is an act of self-love. It’s an opportunity to honor your basic needs as well as receive pleasure from tasty foods.

8. Personal Growth Work:

Invest time in personal development through therapy, courses, workshops, or reading self-improvement books. Working on your personal growth is a powerful way to demonstrate self-love and gain more insights into who you are and the narratives you hold about yourself.

9. Digital Detox:

Disconnect from screens and social media for a set period. Social media provides a great distraction; however, often times, it leaves us feeling ever more disconnected. Use this time to focus on yourself, engage in offline activities, and foster a deeper connection with your inner self.

This time of being alone is not going to be comfortable. It’s something that will take practice and self-compassion. Just because it’s uncomfortable doesn’t mean that it’s bad. Using your alone time to better understand yourself can help lessen that pain you feel in time. Through self-love, you learn your worth by nurturing your well-being and treating yourself with kindness and compassion.

What’s your go-to way to show yourself some love and kindness? Anything that’s made a real difference in how you feel about yourself?
