Therapy Is Like Hiking

I took some much-needed time off for a vacation. I got to spend time on the beach and in nature – both are really restorative for me. My fiancé and I completed a 7.3-mile hike in Yosemite National Park and it was amazing.  As we drove back to our hotel I began to reflect on how therapy is very similar to hiking.

1. It’s a mind game

Not only are hikes physically exhausting they can be mentally exhausting too. Hiking is a huge mental test. I second guess whether I can make it to the top because my brain tells me it’s too far. I overcome this by giving myself a pep talk or breaking down the hike into short lengths. Like one more waterfall to pass before we reach the top.

While hiking, decisions are made like which path to take or where to put your foot so you can step safely. I have learned not to look over the edge if there isn’t a railing because falling is scary.

Just like in therapy it can be mentally exhausting. You look at where you want to be and it feels like it will take too long to get there. The terrain might be rough and your brain tells you there is no way you can have a better life. Just like in therapy you find ways to keep going. You learn to talk to yourself more positively and break things down into smaller pieces instead of trying to change everything at once. You learn what your boundaries are and how to manage your fears and anxieties (like not looking over the ledge).

2. You take breaks

While hiking it’s important to take breaks so you can continue up the trail. You need to recharge, maybe eat something, drink something, or apply more sunscreen. You take as many breaks as you need. It’s your journey to the top and we will all stop at different times.

Just like when taking care of your mental health you need to take breaks. You engage in self-care to recharge, energize, and succeed as you continue on your journey. Your journey is unique to you and it is a healthy responsibility to learn about your needs along the way!

3. The view from the top is worth it

Once you trek all the way to the top you get to experience the best part – the most amazing view. Just like in therapy when you reach a turning point your eyes are open to things you haven’t seen before. You also get to reflect back and look at all the ground you’ve covered. You did that. No one else made your legs move up the trail, you did that. No one forced you to work on yourself, you did that.

4. The descent

When hiking, I experience a high from climbing to the top and I get a second wave of energy to go down the mountain. I have this new confidence because I have conquered this mountain and I know this trail now. Going down is so much sweeter because you are familiar with the terrain and you know what to expect. It’s a well-earned accomplishment!

So therapy is like a hike. It is challenging, enlightening, and rewarding.

Very good comparison! I never thought about it like that- it makes sense. You need to break things down so you don’t get overwhelmed. I relate to overcoming my fear of heights. I am working on climbing a deer stand – a little bit at a time- I’m almost to the top- I never would have imagined doing this years ago. Thanks for sharing!

Exactly! No need to take things all at once.
