What Does Trusting The Process Really Mean?

In the world of mental health and self-discovery, the phrase “trusting the process” echoes through therapy rooms, offering a beacon of hope to those seeking answers. But what does it really mean, and why does it matter?

What does “trusting the process” mean?

Oftentimes, people come to therapy looking for answers, and they want them quickly. Unfortunately, you are more complicated than thinking about the life you want, click your heels three times, and boom, you’re healed. Trusting the process requires feeling your feelings, understanding them, and holding space for them. In that gray area of just sitting is where the magic happens. During the process you are growing and it takes time. Trusting the process means giving yourself space to heal and not trying to rush to the solution.

What role does patience play in the healing process?

I get a lot of eye rolls when I tell people to trust the process because the answer of sit in it doesn’t feel good enough. We naturally want a quick-fix solution. We don’t want to feel bad anymore. We want to jump to the rainbows and sunshine part. I get it, it’s nice in the sunshine. Patience with ourselves is a big part of the healing process. You are learning more about yourself, and that takes times. You are learning about your likes, dislikes, feelings, values, who you are and so much more. All of those things are part of the healing process and that takes time to figure out. The healing journey isn’t a sprint; it’s more like a never-ending marathon because you’re in a constant state of change.

How can individuals navigate setbacks and challenges in the healing process?

Setbacks are inevitable. You are going to fall back into old patterns and do things you don’t want to do anymore. It’s all part of the process.  Sometimes you gotta go backward to go forward.  Often times I like to use this analogy.

Imagine you are in the middle of a field, and there is tall grass. In that tall grass is a clear path, you’ve taken that path many times it’s familiar to you, but at the end of the path isn’t where you want to be. Where you want to be is at the top of the hill that there isn’t a clear path to. So you have to make a new path. This requires walking through the tall grass. While walking through that tall grass, you become overwhelmed. You go back and take the clear path, the familiar path, but you end up not where you want to be. So you try again on the new path. This time, you can see your footsteps where you walked before, so you make it a little farther, but you come to a log, and you aren’t sure how to get over it, so you go back to the familiar path. You keep repeating this process, but each time you take a new path it becomes a little more clear, a little more familiar. That old path starts to grow grass and become covered up because you don’t take it as much. The old path is still there but it’s not as comfortable anymore. As you forge this new path you are trusting in yourself that you will one day make it to the top of the hill. You know it’s not without its obstacles, and when you start from the beginning, you see the knowledge that you have gained making the new path. The path eventually becomes the more familiar path. This is trusting the process. This, my friend, is the messy, confusing, and beautiful essence of trusting the process.

So, next time someone tells you to trust the process, remember it’s not about instant solutions or shortcuts. It’s about embracing the messy journey, having the patience to deal with the mess, and bouncing back when setbacks throw you off course. Healing’s not a race; it’s more like a chaotic, beautiful dance. So, take a breath, embrace the chaos, and trust that you’re on a path uniquely yours, growing and evolving with every step. Cheers to the slow dance of progress!
