What Is DBT?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a therapy with 4 key areas: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal training. DBT focuses on building skills with those needing help with strong negative emotions as well as building confidence in effective communication.

What does DBT treatment look like?

The full model of DBT includes an individual therapist and a DBT skills group that assigns homework and dairy cards (tracking system used to track what skills you have used). While treatment effectiveness increases when both group and individual therapy are done simultaneously, some cannot partake in the full model and may only choose to do one. In my practice, we combine skills building and individual therapy to help you reach your therapy goals.

The name dialectical holds a philosophical perspective meaning a balancing of opposites. DBT therapists work with clients to avoid black and white and all or nothing thinking in order to trust the grey area. The and-both perspective allows for clients to see the two truths of a situation that seem to be opposite of each other. DBT is about accepting the things you cannot change and changing your response to them, in ways that are most beneficial and least destructive. 

In therapy, this may mean learning and strengthening skills by completing worksheets or role-playing. It’s important to practice the skills learned between sessions so you gain the confidence to use them when necessary. 

What does DBT treat?

DBT was originally developed for those with borderline personality disorders but was later discovered it can be helpful with 

  • Depression

  • Anxiety

  • PTSD 

  • Self-esteem

  • Assertiveness

  • Boundary setting

  • Substance abuse 

  • and more

Individuals

DBT works well with individuals who are struggling with attending to their needs and having those hard conversations. It teaches confidence without overstepping. It helps you find the balance between aggression and assertiveness.
