Diagnosing

“You’re diagnosing me aren’t you?”  I hear this question a lot and most of the time the answer is no. I do not diagnose every client every time because it isn’t always helpful. Sometimes it can cloud the treatment if you become stuck on the label. On the other hand, it can be helpful to have a name for what you are experiencing. It really comes down to knowing yourself and the reason why you want or need a diagnosis. Together we will explore that and take our time to ensure you are getting the healthy answers you are looking for.

If you have a high-security clearance job or you don’t trust your employer’s view of mental health, there are ways of protecting yourself from employment risk while still receiving the help you need. Self-pay options for mental health treatment are a way to keep a diagnosis off your medical records. Talk to your clinician about your employment concerns and discuss options for what they include in your file.

Medications

Counselors in Missouri are not authorized to prescribe medication, however, I am one who believes in the science and efficacy of experience and proof. I believe to get the best results for mental health is when medication and therapy are used together.

Do I think everyone needs to be on medication? No.

Do I think in some instances medication is necessary? Yes.

Are you on medication and you don’t want to be? Let’s collaborate with your psychiatrist or primary care physician to discuss the possibility of going off some or all of your medications.

I choose to look at each person individually. Perhaps you need medication and don’t have a clue where to look. I can connect you with a psychiatrist.

Let’s talk about risks and benefits, dosages, and what signs to look for that might indicate that you need to go back on your meds. Let’s talk about who should prescribe your medication and your fears or concerns surrounding that.

My goal is always for you to be a leader in your journey to recovery and me to be the guide holding the flashlight when you need help.
